I have only been researching my family's genealogy for a few months, and at first, I have worked mostly on my father's side, the Garlick name. But I have finally moved to my mother's family. She was an Irwin from Ireland, but her grandmother and great-grandfather were McCartneys.
Hugh McCartney was born in Ireland in 1830 and died in Altoona, PA. His wife, Rose, was also born in Ireland and died in Altoona. They had three children: Mary, born in 1856; Rose (possibly nicknamed Annie), born in 1858; and Elizabeth (nicknamed Lizzie), born in 1865. All three children were born in Altoona.
Hugh McCartney, wife Rose, daughter Lizzie (Elizabeth) and two other daughters are listed in 1880 Altoona, Pa. census.
Elizabeth married David Crawford Irwin in Altoona and in the 1900 census Hugh McCartney is listed living with them as father-in-law. His wife Rose must have died already. That census lists Hugh's immigration from Ireland as 1850. His age does seem to change on various censuses.
I have not found any immigration records or ship's logs that show where they entered the country or when and where they came from in Ireland. My grandfather Paul T. Irwin, Elizabeth McCartney's son, said we came from the county of Donegal, but I don't know if he meant the Irwins, the McCartneys or both.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
