Elizabeth McCartney

This inquiry was sent by Phyllis Phillips. If you have any related information, please contact her at OnlyonePhyl@aol.com.

My great-great grandmother is Elizabeth McCartney who married my great-great grandfather, William S Allen in Indiana.

I have a scroll made by my great grandmother Catherine Stewart Allen. It lists their parents and children.

It is said that Elizabeth was from Montgomery Co NC. I have not, as yet, been able to document her background. It is interesting to note, however, that on the marriage certificate she lists her name as Betsey Stewart. We are speculating that perhaps she married a Stewart, who may have passed away and she left North Carolina with the Stewart family to Indiana.

Elizabeth "Betsey" McCartney was born 5/10/1804 according to family genealogists, now deceased so we have no "source" documentation. William Allen, her husband was born 6/12/1805 in Barren Co KY. William's father, Elisha Allen, born about 1762 was born in Old Rowan Co NC. Elisha was an early settler in Indiana, bringing his wife Sarah (Akers?) and children.

McCartneys in Indiana 1820 census are listed below per Clark Co Indiana GenWeb, although counties they lived in are listed in right column.
